(Asimina triloba). Deciduous. Zones 5-8.
Although threatened by deforestation, this luxurious native tree is making a big come back!
The Pawpaw grows to around 20 feet in height and bears scrumptious, 5 inch, seemingly exotic fruit. The only thing that comes close is the South American cherimoya, sometimes found at specialty produce markets. Pawpaw flesh is soft and creamy, but lighter than that of an avocado, and oh so sweet!
Pawpaw trees have a medium growth rate and may bear fruit as early as four years.
These seed were harvested from Pawpaw orchards and will yield considerably larger and more flavourful fruit than their wild counterparts.
Requires Expedited / Xpresspost if you order Pawpaw Seeds in the Winter. This can help to lessen their time spent in frigid temperature. Seeds can die if temperatures reach below -23C during shipment.

Cold Hardiness: Zones 5-8
Edible: Yes
Size: Small Tree
Growth Rate: Medium
Nitrogen Fixer: No
Native Plant: Yes
Germination: 85-95%
Sun Requirements: Partial shade. Pawpaws are an understory tree and the young trees need shade to survive and thrive. Full sun will kill baby pawpaw trees! Older trees do fine in the sun, so if you don't have a shady spot, you can build your saplings a simple shelter for their first couple years. We've build very minimal, fir bow structures which has worked beautifully.
Soil Preference: Moist, but well draining. Rich soil.
