Growing Instruction
Growth Habit: Can grow up to 5 feet in height. Leave 12-18" spacing between valerian plants. Timing: Start indoors 4 to 6 weeks before last risk of frost. Germination takes 7-21 days. Direct sow: Direct seed in the Spring or Fall, 3/8 to 1/2" deep in moisten soil. 1 seed per inch, and follow by thinning 12-18" inches apart when plants are grown more than 6 inches. Seeding: For best germination result, keep soil temperature between 18 to 20 degrees. Keep soil moist. Transplant outside after risk of frost has passed and seedlings are more than 6" inches tall. Valeria self-sows easily once established.
** Lubelski cultivar growing tip: Great results in yield were shown after seeds were started in outdoors beds around the end of summer. Followed by transplanting the plants into the soil in the Fall to overwinter until the following spring.
Growing: Valerian tolerates most soils but prefer moist and well-draining. Best results when planted in sun/partial sun.
Harvesting: Roots are harvested the second fall of plants life. Main root will die back in the winter if left untouched and new growths will appear in the spring around its base. Self-sows readily
