Tomato Seeds - Brunete
Indeterminate. 80 days to maturity.
Brunete Tomato is an heirloom variety named after a small village on the outskirts of Madrid, in Spain. A nation known for their love of tomatoes, this festival favourite is sure to delight! Hardy plants produce an abundance of large beefsteak tomatoes, up to 500 grams each, with a classic full bodied flavour. Brunete Tomatoes are excellent sandwich slicers. The colour of their ripened skin is reminiscent of Spain’s deep red-orange sunsets! What a treat! If you find yourself in Spain this Summer, be sure to check out La Tomatina Buñol, an annual Tomato Throwing Festival - how fun!
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
INDETERMINATE: Plants grow and produce fruit continually, they require strong support and pruning— this helps with air flow.
TIMING: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Harden off seedlings before transplanting, after last frost.
GERMINATION: 6-30 days. Prefers soil temperatures above 20°C.
SEEDING: Sow 1/8”-1/4” deep. Space plants 18”-24” apart. Space rows 24”-36” apart. Crowding increases risk of disease.
GROWING: Lack of adequate light can make seedlings leggy, bring light closer if this happens. Transplant seedlings deeply, up to their first set of leaves. Heavy feeders, start with plenty of compost. Top up amendments every 2 weeks—seaweed and fish fertilizers work well. Crushed eggshells are an easy way to provide needed calcium to the soil. Water regularly. Enjoy!
