Maple Tree Seeds - Japanese Red
(Acer palmatum atropurpureum) Perennial. Zones 5 - 8.
Small in stature, trees can reach up to 25 feet at maturity. Dynamic and striking foliage from Spring to Fall. Good in sun-dappled understory spot. Slightly hardier than its green leafed cousin. Well-draining, slightly acid soil. Excellent for bonsai.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
For best results, sow seeds outdoors in the Summer. Shade, mulch and protection from rodents is needed outdoors. If starting indoors…
SEED PRETREATMENT: Soak seeds for 24 hours. Mix seeds with moist soil 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag or container.
STRATIFICATION: First, start 120 days warm/moist (20°C), the top of your fridge is a good spot for this. Check periodically for mold. Next, 120 days cold/moist (5°C), in the fridge is a good spot for this. Check periodically for even moisture.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 3/8” deep. Alternate soil temperature during the day (15-20°C) and night (10-15°C). Water evenly and regularly until germination.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 60-100 days.
