Maltese Cross Seeds - Scarlet
(Lychnis chalcedonica) Perennial. Zones 3 - 10.
Maltese Cross is a marvelous, old-fashion, tried and true garden variety. Plants bloom in early Summer, with bursts of deep, brilliant scarlet coloured blooms atop tall stems. Plants can grow 2-3’ tall, though it might take a couple seasons to reach their mature height. Maltese Cross are very attractive to both butterflies and hummingbirds. When in full sun, their blooms truly glow! Also great as a cut flower! Both deer and rabbit resistant!
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
TIMING: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the final frost date. Harden off seedlings before transplanting, after final frost.
GERMINATION: 7-21 days. Keep soil moist, cover with a plastic dome until germination. Seeds require light to germinate.
SEEDING: Sow seeds on the surface, tamp down gently. Space plants 18-24” apart. Space rows 24-30” apart.
GROWING: Full sun to partial shade. Nutrient rich, well-draining soil is best. Prefers consistently moist conditions. Protect from strong winds, may need support if placed in a windy spot. Leave plants be in the Fall, cut back in the Spring just before new growth begins.
HARVESTING: For fresh flowers: cut stems when blooms are mostly open.
