Magnolia Seeds - Saucer
(Magnolia x soulangeana) Perennial. Zones 4 - 9.
Origin in France, 1826. One of the earliest flowering Spring trees, sensitive to late Spring frosts. Prolific flowers, absolutely dreamy and fragrant! Blooms range from white to pink, with two-toned petals. Can grow 20-40 feet tall and wide.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
For best results, sow seeds outdoors in the Fall. Shade, mulch and wind protection are needed in the beginning. If sowing indoors...
SEED PRETREATMENT: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Mix seeds with a moistened grow medium 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag, covered tray/cells or container.
STRATIFICATION: 120 days cold/moist (5°C). Place plastic bag with seeds and soil in your refrigerator, preferably in a veggie crisper. Inspect periodically for even moisture.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 1/2” deep. Alternate soil temperature during the day (20-25°C) and night (15-20°C). Water evenly and regularly.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 45-60 days.
