(Magnolia liliiflora) Perennial. Zones 5-8.
Lily Magnolia is a magnificent focal point for any garden or backyard!
It features majestic, pink perfumed flowers, each with six or seven four inch long pink-purple petals with white inside. They are an absolute delight to the senses! It flowers in Spring and continues into the summer.
The Magnolia tree is one of the most ancient flowering trees known to mankind. Interestingly, Magnolias evolved before the bees, and can only be pollinated by beetles.
A smaller variety of the Magnolia species, the Lily Magnolia is a compact, rounded shrub that grows slowly to about ten feet. It needs space to grow to its full size, so don’t crowd it. The green oval leaves turn yellow-brown in Fall and produce reddish-brown cone-like fruits. The cones contain red kidney-shaped seeds that mature in late Fall.
Lily Magnolia is best grown in moist, fertile, slightly acidic, rich, well-drained loam in full sun to light shade. It is intolerant of poor soils, but so worth the fuss!
