Hornbeam Tree Seeds - American Hornbeam
(Carpinus caroliniana) Perennial. Zones 3-9.
Betulaceae (Birch) family. Native range—Eastern N. America. Also known as Blue Beech, a fantastic understory tree, thriving in partial to full shade! Can grow 20-35 feet tall. Excellent hardwood for making tools, although not used commercially due to the limited amount of wood per tree. Slow growth rate. Its native habitat is in moist woods, rocky slopes and along stream beds. Fall foliage turns shades of red, orange and yellow.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
For best results, sow seeds outdoors in Summer. If starting indoors…
SEED PRETREATMENT: Gently rub seeds on fine sandpaper. Then, soak seeds for 24 hours. Mix seeds with moist soil 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag or container.
STRATIFICATION: 60 days warm/moist (20°C), a spot out of direct light is good. Monitor for mold. Next, 90 days cold/moist (5°C), the fridge is a good spot for this. Check for even moisture.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds on the soil surface, tamp down gently. Seeds require light to germinate. Alternate soil temperature during the day (15-20°C) and night (10-15°C). Water evenly and regularly until germination.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 60 days.
