Dusty Miller Seeds
(Jacobaea maritima) Annual. 90 days to maturity.
Dusty Miller, also known as Silver Ragwort, is often grown for its unique foliage. Its lacey shaped leaves are covered with fine silver hairs, giving them a velvety appearance. Plants will also produce small yellow blooms, however, some gardener’s choose to remove them entirely, to maintain optimal visual interest of the foliage. Dusty Miller is a great variety for floral arrangements as their silver tones are a favourite “filler” plant. Can be grown as a tender perennial in zones 7 through 10. Plants are both deer resistant and drought tolerant, a win-win!
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
TIMING: Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost date. Transplant into larger pots/cells once first set of true leaves appear. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors.
GERMINATION: 7-14 days. Bottom watering is best, to not disturb tiny seeds. Keep soil moist, temperatures of 20-24°C are best.
SEEDING: Sow seeds on the soil surface, tamp down gently. Space plants 12” apart.
GROWING: Full sun, can tolerate partial shade, but may become leggy if too shaded and colour will be less silver. Prefers well-draining soil, can tolerate drought conditions over those that are overly wet. Can grow up to 24” tall.
HARVESTING: For floral arrangements, cut foliage that is well developed and sturdy. Be sure to pick in cooler parts of the day, can be quick to wilt, place in water promptly.
