Dogwood Seeds - Grey Swamp
(Cornus racemosa) Perennial. Zones 4 - 8.
Native range—Central to eastern N. America. Shrubs can grow 10-15 feet tall. White flowers bloom in early Summer, becoming white berries on bright red stems by Fall—a favorite of many birds. Plants spread by suckering, be mindful of placement.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
For best results, sow outdoors in the Summer. If sowing indoors...
SEED PRETREATMENT: Seeds require scarification. Nick seed coat with a knife or gently rub on fine sandpaper. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Mix seeds with a moistened grow medium 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag or container.
STRATIFICATION: 90 days warm/moist (20°C), keep an eye on seeds for signs of mold. Then, 90 days cold/moist (5°C), in your fridge is a good spot for this. Check moisture periodically.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 3/8” deep. Alternate soil temperatures during the day (15-20°C) and night (10-15°C). Water evenly and regularly.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 60-90 days. It’s also possible for seeds to germinate the following Spring.
