Dandelion Seeds - Italian
(Cichorium intybus) 55 days to maturity.
Italian Dandelion, a member of the Chicory family, is often grown for the depth of its savoury greens. Not to be confused with Common Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), this variety is a chicory heirloom, praised for its quick growth and versatility. It prefers growing in cooler weather and may bolt in the heat of Summer, producing blue edible flowers. Its leaves are hearty and will continue producing when you cut them back. Delicious in both cold or warm salads, soups and stews!
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
TIMING: Direct sow outdoors as soon as the soil is workable. Succession plant every 3 weeks for a continuous harvest.
GERMINATION: 7-14 days. Seeds will struggle to germinate if soil temperatures are above 25°C, prefers soil between 15-20°C. Keep soil moist until germination.
SEEDING: Sow seeds 1/8” deep. Thin plants to 6-8” apart. Space rows 12-18” apart.
GROWING: Prefers growing in cooler weather. Soil high in nutrients will help ensure plants grow quickly, this will produce the best flavour and optimal quality. Water regularly during dry spells.
HARVESTING: Pick leaves as needed, younger leaves will be more tender. Leaves will re-grow if cut above the base. Plants will grow a tall stalk with blue flowers if left unharvested.
