Rubiaceae (Madder) Family. Native range—China, Taiwan and Japan. A flowering shrub with glossy dark green leaves and very fragrant white blooms. Its fruit can be used to make a natural yellow dye. Can also be grown as a house plant.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
SEED PRETREATMENT: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours.
TIMING: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before final Spring frost date. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors. OR direct sow outdoors in a cold frame, 3-4 week before final frost.
GERMINATION: 30 days. Seedlings will emerge faster in
warmer soil, 20°C is ideal. Keep soil moist until germination.
SEEDING: Sow seeds on the soil surface, tamp down gently. Seeds require light to germinate. Space plants 36” apart.
GROWING: Prefers bright indirect sun or part shade. Well-draining, acidic soil is best. When grown as a perennial, plants can reach 6 feet tall and wide. Will flower late Spring. Keeps its glossy green leaves all year round.
