Calendula Seeds - Radio
(Calendula officinalis) Annual. 60 days to maturity.
Radio Calendula is a heirloom variety first introduced in the 1930’s, aptly a time when radios were an exciting and humble source of entertainment. Although they may have waned in availability, Radio Calendula is making a comeback and we can’t wait for you to grow them this Summer! Their petals are like bright orange quills bursting from the center, like actual rays of sunshine. Plant a joyful patch and listen to the local pollinators sing in merriment! Keep plants well deadheaded and they’ll bloom until the Fall.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
TIMING: Direct sow outdoors in early Spring. Plant every 2-3 weeks until Summer, for a continuous season of blooms.
GERMINATION: 14-21 days. Keep soil moist until germination.
SEEDING: Sow seeds 1/4” deep. Space plants 6” apart.
GROWING: Grows easily in most garden conditions. Pinch off first few buds to promote bushier plants. Deadhead spent blooms regularly. Calendula is a self-seeding annual.
HARVESTING: For cut flowers: harvest stems when flowers are half open. For edible or medicinal use: harvest flowers when they are fully open, remove petals from the flower center. Use Calendula petals fresh or dried.
