Bean Seeds, Bush - Orca / Calypso (Dry)
80-100 days for dried
Orca Beans, also known as Calypso Beans, are simply the most charming beans you’ll grow! One of our all time favourite dried varieties, for both bean beauty and their buttery texture. Plants are early to ripen, with 4-5 beans per pod. This heirloom variety is said to originate over 400 years ago, throughout the Caribbean and Mexico. Orca Beans are black and white, with contrasting dots on either side, their sweetness makes us smile every time we plant them!
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
TIMING: Direct sow outdoors after all risk of frost has passed.
GERMINATION: 7-14 days. Prefers warm soil. Will likely rot if soil is too cold or wet.
SEEDING: Presoak seeds overnight before planting (optional). Sow 1” deep. Space plants 2” apart. Space rows 18” apart.
GROWING: Bush beans grow to a height of 1’-2’ and don’t require any support. Can tolerate growing in poor soil. Will fix nitrogen in the soil, making it readily available to other plants.
HARVESTING: For dried beans, allow pods to fully form and mostly dry out on the plant. Pull whole plants, hang them upside down for 1-2 weeks in a dry, dark spot. Remove beans, winnow off pods and other debris. Store in a cool, dark spot.
