Basil Seeds - Tulsi, Vana
(Ocimum gratissimum) Annual. 90-100 days to maturity.
Vana Tulsi, also known as Clove Basil, Wild Holy Basil and Tree Basil, is one of the four main varieties of Holy basil. Growing with a very strong aroma of cloves, plants can reach 5 feet tall. Their leaves are larger, with deep green coloration and slightly fuzzy texture. Vana Tulsi is held as a sacred herb by many, with both spiritual and healing properties. Leaves are edible, both fresh or dried, and are often used in teas.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
TIMING: Start plants indoors 6-8 weeks before final frost date. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors, after all risk of frost has passed.
GERMINATION: 14-21 days. Requires warm soil to germinate, 25-30°C. Keep soil moist until germination.
SEEDING: Sow seeds on soil surface, seeds require light to germinate. Space plants 12”-18” apart and rows 18”-24” apart.
GROWING: Prefers compost rich soil. Once plants are 6” tall, pinch off the growing tips—this will help the plants become bushy. Keep an eye on flowering mid-summer, remove flowers to extend its leafy growing life if that is your main concern or simply let them flower.
HARVESTING: Use pinched off tips as needed throughout the summer or cut whole plant before final frost. Use fresh or dried.
