Basil Seeds - Bush Basil
(Ocimum basilicum minimum) Annual. 55 days to maturity.
Bush Basil is a lovely compact variety, with small stature but big flavour! Its leaves are small and somewhat pointy, a very cute choice for garnishing. This bright and sweet basil is excellent grown in containers, either indoors or on your patio in the Summer. We like pinching our basil plants back to promote bushier leaf growth, but if Bush Basil is left to flower, it has tiny white blooms that local pollinators will also appreciate!
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
TIMING: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before final frost date. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors, after all risk of frost has passed.
GERMINATION: 7-10 days. Prefers warm soil to germinate, 18°C-21°C. Keep soil moist until germination.
SEEDING: Sow seeds 1/8-1/4” deep. Space plants 12”-18” apart. Space rows 18”-24” apart.
GROWING: Prefers compost rich soil. Once plants are 6” tall, pinch off the growing tips—this will help the plants become bushy. Keep an eye on flowering mid-summer, remove flowers to extend its leafy growing life.
HARVESTING: Use pinched off tips as needed throughout the summer or cut whole plant at the end of the season.
