Apple Seeds - Sargent's Crabapple
(Malus sargentii) Perennial. Zone 4 - 8. Rosaceae (Rose) Family. Native to Japan. One of the smallest ornamental crabapple trees, can grow 8-10 feet tall in 15 years. Trees are covered with white scented flowers in early Spring. Blooms become tiny bright red fruit by Fall, birds love them!
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
For hardier seedlings, sow seeds in raised beds outdoors in the Fall.
If sowing indoors…
SEED PRETREATMENT: Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Mix seeds with moist soil 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag, covered tray/cells or container.
STRATIFICATION: 120 days cold/moist (5°C). Place plastic bag with seeds and soil in your refrigerator, preferably in a veggie crisper. Inspect periodically for even moisture.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 1/8”, ideally in a peat/perlite mix. Alternate soil temperatures during the day (20-25°C) and night (15-20°C). Water evenly and regularly.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 15-30 days.
