Big, bold and beautiful! Elephant Head Amaranth is a German heirloom from the 1800’s that’s uniqueness is visually stunning. Its deep burgundy blooms form in a dense cluster that resembles the shape of an elephant’s trunk. We guarantee, this one will have everyone talking! As an ornamental amaranth, its blooms are the focal point, although seeds are still edible, simply producing lower yields. Have fun with this unique and rare variety!
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
TIMING: Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date OR direct sow outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Harden off seedlings before transplanting outside.
GERMINATION: 7-10 days. Prefers soil temperatures 18-25°C.
Keep soil moist until germination, bottom watering is best.
SEEDING: Sow seeds on soil surface, tamp down gently. Space plants 12”-24” apart. Space rows 24”-36” apart.
GROWING: Some support may be needed. Plants thrive in full sun and hot summer heat, easy to grow.
HARVESTING: Pick young leaves for fresh eating. Flowers are edible, but can also be used for their ornamental beauty. To collect the grain, rub the flower heads over a bucket, while plants are still in the ground, seeds will fall easily when ready
