Bearberry Seeds
(Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) Perennial. Zones 2 - 7.
**Seeds require fire or an acid treatment to germinate**
(In nature, this would typically occur by a bird or animal digesting the seeds, their stomach acid would do the trick).
Ericaceae (Heather) Family. Bearberry is a low growing shrub, excellent for erosion control along steep slopes. An evergreen, with succulent dark green leaves and red berries, best left for the birds. Prefers acidic soil. Lovely pink Spring blooms.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
For best results, sow outdoors in Spring/Summer. This warm period is necessary to ensure germination in Spring. If sowing indoors...
SEED PRETREATMENT: Quick passing fire or an acid treatment is needed to break the seed’s dormancy. After that process, soak seeds in hot water for 24 hours. Then, mix seeds with moist soil 4x seed volume. Place in a plastic bag or container.
STRATIFICATION: 120 days warm/moist (20°C), pick a spot out of direct light. Check for mold. Next, 90 days cold/moist (5°C), in your fridge is a good spot. Check periodically for even moisture.
POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow seeds 1/8” deep. Soil temperatures around 15°C are ideal. Water evenly and regularly.
GERMINATION: When all previously mentioned requirements are fulfilled, germination generally occurs in 60-90 days.
