Growth Habit: Sprawling, but not vining. Can fill-out at 1 ½ feet tall. Continuous 1-1 ½” blooms
Sun Requirements: Full sun, part shade
Soil Preference: Well drained, average soil. Too much nitrogen encourages leaves, not flowers. Keep moist during dry weather.
When to Plant: Direct seed two weeks before last frost OR start indoors 4-5 weeks before last frost date.
How to Plant:
Direct sow: Sow seeds ½-1“ deep. Cover well with soil as Nasturtium seed needs darkness to germinate. They will germinate in 7-10 days. Thin young plants to 8-12” apart.
Transplant: Sow seeds indoors in individual pots or divided trays. Plant two seeds ½-1” deep. Cover well with soil as Nasturtium seed needs darkness to germinate. They will germinate in 6-14 days. Thin to one plant per pot or cell. Move young plants to bright light until ready to transplant. Harden off before transplanting after last Spring frost.
When to Harvest: Harvest Nasturtium flowers as they open through Summer and Fall. Nasturtiums will not tolerate frost.
How to Harvest: Harvest flowers when fully open. Harvest flowers often to encourage more blooms. Nasturtium flowers and leaves are edible.
Uses: Grind nasturtium flowers into a spicy pesto, use young leaves in salads and cooking or even pickle the green seed pods to replace capers with a homegrown alternative.
