85 days. Heirloom Basil Seeds. Cinnamon basil is a mildly flavoured sweet basil. It has deep purple stems, purple-green leaves and pink flowers. 40-50 days. Bronze Arrowhead Heirloom Lettuce is a sweet and crispy green, perfect for fruity salads (we enjoyed mandarins, almonds & cranberries). 90 days. Fatalii is a gorgeous orange habanero type pepper, 150,000 to 400,000 on the Scoville heat scale. Originating in the Central African Republic, Fatalii is hot with a distinct citrus flavour making it perfect for salsas and hot sauces as well as any type of dish with lemons and limes. 75 days. (Solanum melanocerasum) The garden huckleberry originates from Africa and yields huge quantities of large dark purple berries for cooking. Pick only darkest berries without any green for the best flavour. Berries with green can be poisonous. Great for jams, pies and freezing. Tall plants are sturdy and do not require staking. Black Mulberry (Morus nigra) Zones 5-9. This old world fruit is growing in popularity here in Canada, and for good reason! Sweet, oblong berries hang abundantly from these trees. White Russian Mulberry (Morus alba tatarica) Zones 4-8. This mulberry is a cold hardy Russian variety, first introduced to North America by Russian Mennonites in the late 1800s. These berries are sweet, but less so than red varieties. Wonderful to cook with or to dry for winter use. The trees are quite lovely, reaching 30 feet. 80 days Noir des Carmes is a fine melon from France dating back from the 1700’s. Its dark ribbed exterior contrasts with its fine orange flesh when opened. The fruit are sweet and aromatic when left to ripen on the vine. Melons are 3-5 pounds each. Approximately 15 open pollinated seeds.
Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium) Zones 4-8. Also known as blue barberry, this shrub grows to 8 feet, as beautiful hollylike leaves, prickly stems and deliciously tart berries! The berries can be substituted in for red barberries, which are common in mideastern cookery. Medicinally, the bark of this plant can be used internally against systemic yeast overgrowth. 80 days. Red Marconi is one of our favourite red peppers. Sweeter than most bell peppers and full of flavour, it is great for frying, salads and making paprika. 80 days. 1800’s from Germany. Reisentraube resembles a cluster of grapes producing huge clusters of large cherry tomatoes. These plants will yield more delicious full flavour tomatoes than most can possibly eat! Approximately 30 open pollinated seeds.
85 days. Annual in Canada. Rosemary has green needle like leaves, with a pine-minty flavour that is a staple in many sorts of cookery. Delicious with everything from lamb to cauliflower! 68 days. Sugar Daddy Snow Peas have nice three inch long pods growing in pairs at the tops of the plants making picking easy. The plants are two feet tall and should receive some support to stay upright. Sugar Daddy Snow Peas are stringless, delicious and have good disease resistance. 75 days. (Solanum burbankii) Sunberry also known as wonderberry, produces small and tasty, purple fruit. Great for fresh eating as well as cooking. Easy to grow plants. This plant is a nightshade and, as with potatoes, it's chlorophyll is bound with poisonous alkaloids. Eat only fully ripened, dark purple berries, without any green on them.
