Hopi Red Dye is a fabulous multi-purpose plant. Beautiful as a decorative, its flowers are the reddest of all amaranth & its vibrant fuchsia baby leaves are catching on as the next fashionable microgreen. This North American native is used as a dye plant by the Hopi people and is catching on with many fiber-arts enthusiasts. Its dark seeds can be harvested as a nutritious, protein rich, gluten-free grain. Amaranth requires full Sun. 4-20 days for greens, 70 days for flowers and 115 days for seed. 85 days. Centaurea cyanus. Bachelor Buttons also known as Cornflowers bloom in 8-10 weeks and prefer cool temperatures. The flowers are fantastic pinks, whites, reds and blues. A common wildflower species, they are drought and deer resistant and make wonderful cut and dried flowers. Attractive to butterflies. (Moluccella laevis) 90-110 days. Definitely a piece of interest in the flower garden. Bells of Ireland displays gorgeous light green flower spikes, made up little cups (calyxes), each one guarding a tiny white blossom at its center. Known also as Shellflower. Nigella sativa (annual) Black cumin is grown for its seeds which are then used like pepper. The plants are small reaching no more than 12 inches in height. Resina Calendula (Calendula officinalis) grows to 2' on average and has simple, yellow and orange, daisy-like flowers. Resina Calendula is very talented as a dye flower and as well as an edible, adding colour and beauty to salads and jellies. Medicinally, she is the most potent of the calendulas for relieving inflamed, irritated tissue. Direct sow after last frost or 4 weeks prior to last frost for transplants.
